The phrase “fine dining” conjures certain images: fancy tablecloths, reusable plates, snooty waiters, stringent dress codes… But it should come as no surprise to you that as someone who likes to drink, I also like to eat, which occasionally motivates me to leave my abode in search of a meal that can really put the “nom” in “gastronomy.” And so it came to pass that my good friend and I found ourselves at Taco Bell, as we […]

In the interest of full disclosure, I’m going to get right to the point: it wasn’t easy finding a Wind wine for Captain Planet Month. This feat in fact proved so difficult that I began writing my review well in advance of my having actually located a thematically appropriate bottle. Why? Well, it didn’t have anything to do with the Wind Planeteer, Linka, whose origins in the Soviet Union have naturally shrouded her life in secrecy; nor […]

Four wines. Nine people. Five people with whom I remembered to discuss the four wines. Put them all together and what do you get? The tasting that took place at my apartment on Saturday (well, a Saturday, anyway…sorry for the delay) much to the chagrin of neighbors everywhere. By which I mean, the neighbors in my immediate vicinity. While my last tasting had featured wines I’d received from Inter Beaujolais, this time I chose the theme myself. […]

Ladies and gentlemen, it seems that once again, I have succumbed to the machinations of that most temporal of holidays, Groundhog Day; and once again, I find myself stuck in a rut – nigh Murray-esque in its ineluctability. Time may be moving forward, but I alas am not; although my trip to Virginia provided me with a wonderful breath of fresh wine, it had the unintended effect of making my return to the veritable vinic prison of […]

If you’ve ever heard of the Internet – and really, even if you haven’t – you’re probably familiar with the interminable quarrel between ninjas and pirates over the question of who is cooler. And as much as I favor the maritime marauder over the island assassin, there’s one area in which pirates simply can’t compete with their stealthier foes: stealth. And so it was with ninja-like vigilance rather than my usual piratic rapacity that I embarked upon […]

Some days it can be difficult, if not impossible to appreciate the small things in life: the day you lose your job, for instance, or the day your spouse is crushed to death by a wayward piano. Conversely, some days it’s hard not to revel in life’s little pleasures, be they as simple as meeting some old friends you haven’t seen in a while, or bragging to these friends about the four bottles of Cru Beaujolais you […]

Do any of you remember that time I railed against the unjust liquor policies plaguing Pennsylvania, which had resulted in my being unable to receive press samples at my own home? Well, not even a week later, four bottles arrived at my doorstep, along with a proverbial slap in the face. Yes folks, it looks as though I’m already going to have to eat my delicious, delicious words. While I may not have any idea where PA’s […]

This weekend I played host to my cousin, webmaster and (believe it or not) frat brother, Jeff. Although we only drank two wines, they were delicious, but appropriately enough, they also suffered from two noteworthy flaws: first, they were white, and second, they cost $30 apiece. And what with the economy and all, I’ve been making a real effort…well…not to avoid drinking wines beyond my means, but certainly to avoid talking about them as much. Everyone’s been […]

If you follow me on Twitter (which you should absolutely be doing, if for no other reason than because my birthday is on Monday and I’m fewer than 50 follows away from an even 1,000), you may have already seen a piece of pretty strange news. That’s right: this witty wino was invited to write a guest post for another blog! Even if you aren’t following me on Twitter (and for that matter, why aren’t you following […]

Lirac and Roll!08/01/11

Despite my undeniable momentum last month in terms of updating my blog, it appears that as July drew to a close, I was once again stricken with that insufferable little bug called writer’s block, and the wine I’d meant to write about all week has long gone unreviewed. But the funny thing about writer’s block – and this is a centuries-old secret I’m sharing with you, passed down from blogger to blogger over countless generations – is […]
